Investing in a stronger nursing workforce is essential for achieving universal health coverage (UHC). This is the message delivered by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in his surprise appearance before the 2019 Congress of the International Council of Nurses.

“We simply cannot achieve universal health coverage and the health-related targets in the Sustainable Development Goals unless we empower and equip nurses and midwives, and harness their power,” insisted Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
